This was posted back in April Spindle on button won’t start the VFD spindleand the thread has been closed but was never answered or resolved. I’m now running 613 and the VFD still will not turn on. since this button is only for a VFD, why has this still not been resolved?
Some users reported that it could be turned on manually using M3S18000 but we shouldn’t have to. I do have need for this right now as I’m creating a fence. If I use this command, what command will i need to turn it back off once complete?
Thanks to anyone who can answer my 2nd question above. I sure hope C3D will fix it properly though as well.
The “Spindle Off” button in the jog menu works for me to turn it off.
I don’t see a “Spindle On” button??? Spindle On requires a spindle speed, so there would need to be a default speed, or a speed field to type in the speed.
Spindle Off button starts as the Spindle On button. When you select the Spindle On is changes to Spindle Off, but it actually never turns the spindle on.
Last I was looking into it. The command is sending an M3S1000. The Vfd’s are set for a minimum rpm of 8,000 so they will not respond to a command telling them go 1000. I am unsure if build 617 has fixed it yet or not.
This is correct and manually, i can get it to work now that i know how.
I just don’t understand why this button exists in the software if it won’t work. Either remove it or make it work with a speed option, etc. Makes no sense to have a command which won’t work even on their own (branded) spindles.
It exists because Shapeoko as a system was originally designed around routers and not VFDs and Spindles. Carbide3D offers this accessory:
which uses the PWM port on the Carbide Motion Board to turn a router on or off. If I recall correctly the default GRBL config is setup so that M3S1000 is full on and anything less than that is completely off. You can adjust the GRBL config to change that behavior.
I believe the Carbide Motion software will adjust the GRBL settings based off your configuration within Carbide Motion. It sounds like you might not have configured Carbide Motion correctly. Keep in mind I replaced the control board in my Shapeoko 3 some time ago and I do not use the Carbide Motion software so I may be wrong about that. Someone from Carbide3D like @WillAdams would need to weigh in.
Good info however, there is no setting in CM for the spindle speed. Your point may likely be right on why it remains but if so, it should say “Router” instead of “Spindle.”
