Thoughts on the HDM from a new owner

Here is some HSM testing now that I have competant workholding. 5/16" 2 flute, 20,000 RPM, .350" DOC, .0200" OL. Started off at 80 IPM, then went all the way to 200% Feed with absolutely no concern. Video coming soon.

So after tooling around with fusion and the new SMW parts I was able to churn this part out. Itā€™s a storage bracket for the Jtech laser. This will be VHB taped to the cabinet so the laser has a safe home. Even with my mediocre machinist skills, I was able to get within .0004" (.01mm) easily. Iā€™m impressed. This thing absolutely destroys aluminum.

So Iā€™d really like to be able to afford SMW plugs for every hole in my fixture plate setup that would end up being like $400 in plugs after spending $1000 on the plates. Unfortunately thatā€™s not in the budget so Iā€™m going to be 3d printing some out of TPU. Iā€™m happy the share the model of anyone is interested.

Iā€™d like that file. Iā€™ve got holes to plug also? 1/2ā€ correct?

I thought about printing themā€¦ but wondered if the self healing hole aspect will work as well.

The self healing part is a gimmick even from SMW. Print in TPU or a low durometer material

whats that cost out of tpu?

A spool is like 20 bucks and this takes maybe 1/10th of a spoolā€¦ Maybe $5 total?

where do you get your TPU for $20, everything I have been seeing is more like $30.

How many grams of material does each of these use?

I got this spool 2 years ago. Each one uses 1g of filament. Iā€™m printing 100 at a time.

Nice, I like the orange look!

Iā€™d prefer black but I already had orange so ā€¦

If you print a few in black you could spell out words in the fixture plateā€¦

Installing 1,900 plugsā€¦fun!

Different colors are actually really useful for making work/vise/pin locations

Is there really 1900? Iā€™m gonna make my kids count them.

I have a few of the SMW plugs, and I found the self healing hole to work pretty well when using a small pick. Even if the tiny hole doesnā€™t completely self heal, it does mostly, and makes them easy to pull out with a 90Ā° pick. I like the feature. I agree itā€™s a bunch of coin to buy a bunch, but I just bought a 500 pack today. I might actually purchase some flexible resin and print a bunch for the back plate I donā€™t use as much.

i was thinking about making a mold and casting them out of urethane but tpu pretty cheap.
