What did you cut on your Shapeoko/ Nomad today?

A fun one I’m working on for my grandkids. In the raw (onion skin and tabs still on). On to the finishing lady

@Redlander Close ups so you can see the clean cuts on hdu.

That’s amazing. If I were doing that carve in wood I would be sweating losing those islands in the center of the “O”.

I know! I hate going back to wood after using this.

I’m able to run the CNC at max speed the whole time. (Approximately 7000mm/sec.) This took like 45 minutes with 3 bits.

Looking good. The close ups are very useful.

Did you use the same Feed rate for all bit diameters ?
What is the Depth of cut you used.

This is timely information. I am generated tool paths and the runtimes VERY long.
I know I can do better on time.

Which CNC do you have and spindle (or router)?

Original 65mm VFD on a 4x2 Pro 5. Thank you !

Here is the file so you can see exactly what I did. I have the same set up as you do.

Thank you VERY much !

Using a 32 x 24 stock as an example
My tool paths (without 1/16 bit ) is currently 63 hrs.

I am sure to get a good chunk of that time back.

Uh…yes! But you are doing a lot of 3d … currently beyond anything I can advise you on!

Well I should get at least half my time back with your settings.

You are running at speeds I have never used. This will be interesting.

The 3D aspect is not much different from what you do. In fact you are 90% there based on the quality of your work.

I appreciate your advise. Thank you !

@SirGariff

As always, great work and thanks for the fine detailed photos!! I will eventually get some of this material to carve on. Absolutely impressive detail!

I kept pushing the speeds and wanted even more…but alas I maxed out what the Pro 5 can do.

The bits never get hot and hardly even warm at that speed. A little deflection when pushing the depths (like, 1" or more), but not too much, and when carving large open expanses in the center of anything larger than 2x2’ it’s definitely advisable to do a small finishing pass. But I seldom do that if I see the hdu is pulled tight to the table.

If there is any warpage of the hdu, make sure the hump is down and then I use top clamps to pull it down tight to the spoil boards. These are the clamps I use for that.

just need to figure out a finishing pass that goes around…

Looks great! I always like that layered wood.

Think I am figuring this out. Some what.

Good point on the warpage, thanks.

I am down to 35 hrs running at 100 ipm with 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 ball end mills included for finishing.
I can double that in CM once I get a feel for the sounds.

I traditionally run somewhat over the CC numbers.

What is the change you made to get 275 ipm out of the Pro 5 ? I remember a thread from when you started asking about that. I never thought I would run that fast. Now I know why I would.

Is the debris fine dusty material like MDF ?

Thanks again !

I never made any changes. And I’ll be honest. I don’t know the EXACT speeds the Shapeoko will run. I’ve just found that when I set it at 7000mm/min, I can’t get it to go faster when I hit the “+feedspeed” while rubbing in CM. I think it runs around 6750 or so.

Dust is a weird, slightly annoying, dust. Thicker than mdf. It wants to stick to everything. But vacuuming keeps it to a minimum. Gritty to the touch.

Static probably. Acrylic does the same

The Shapeoko 5 Pro can only run 200 ipm if I remember correctly. Even if you bump up the controls in CM, the machine wont run any faster, I think that might be indicative to the stepper motors and how much they can actually handle before jumping teeth inside their housing.
