When you get a brand new CNC right before Christmas and go crazy making gifts for everyone and your wife FINALLY asks you to make something for her. We have a bathroom right off the kitchen that she feels is too close to that area for its intended purposes. She asked for a “No Pooping” sign but gave me no direction as to how it should look. So what is a new CNC user to do but design his own. Best part is…the scrap wood I had available was “pooplar”.
it took 16 hours of machining on my Nomad3 to turn a 3"x4"x.625" block of 6061 aluminum into this ~2"x.5" maker coin.
this is what i would consider my first project on the machine, so far ive created a version of this in renshape, but that was just to make sure everything was going to work.
on christmas day while the children were napping and otherwise occupied, I made the bottom half of this bearing i designed for an end table that will allow a wheel that would otherwise be unusable to be a featured item in my basement.
i still need to machine the top half. shown is a 3D printed version.
this bearing ball carrier is also 3D printed, but ill print the final version in purple…because i like purple. lol.
this wheel will eventually be powdercoated in white, and have my logo put on the barrel, and another banner from a automotive lifestyle company who i like.
(not shown is the glass tabletop that will eventually sit above the wheel)
That’s really cool! Maybe some ‘tire tread’ carved shiplap/PVC wrapped around sides next? LOL
thank you!
i have debated 3d printing a brake caliper and rotor to put in the center to add to the aesthetic, but i want the focus to be on the wheel, so ill probably leave the barrel raw, with my logo as a vinyl sticker.
Oh that’s a great idea!
Another level of ‘the project gone too far’: How about an opaque disc under the caliper with orange LED lights under it? You could run it with an app that gradually glows and dims it to simulate heavy braking.
haha, i do have an idea kicking around that I’ve mocked up in F360 to add some lights that would up-light the wheel, and a small motor to very slowly (think space needle slow) turn the wheel automatically.
i do have a tendency to go a bit overkill on projects. i did spend 16+ hours on that 6061 maker coin after all.
Oh pooh. I saw a video on youtube from an etsy store owner that said her sign that said “Hope Everything Comes out Alright” was her best seller. Hey what ever floats your boat as long as other things dont float.
This is still in progress, but it’s an edge glued serving tray / beer flight for a friend’s pizza place. Old wood from my family farm(maybe wormy chestnut?). V carved and resin filled. Still have to do the final facing operation once the resin cures tomorrow.
V cuts for the letters? Nice clean interior corners!
Great idea
What Font did you use?
Thanks
Can epoxy be run through a planer to clean off the top surface?
I don’t recall. And I converted them to curves to move the individual letters around. I think it was just Arial Bold.
Yes, Advanced V-Carve for the letters & numbers. Contour for the chamfers & outline.
Here are some project that I finished up as Christmas gifts for family. So glad I pulled the trigger on my Pro XXL last summer because I have loved using it but the Pro 5 sure does look nice! My wife would not be happy though!
This is fantastic! Very nice.
Not to be that guy but when are wives happy about anything you buy for YOU.
My wife bought a stand for flowers, some steel with a ceramic top, it lasted for 2 days before the robot vacuum knocked it over and the ceramic part broke. The top was replaced with some random cardboard, and I have had in mind to make a suitable top since then(2021) . Today I finally had the time to do so.
