What is rastering

Hello group,

Somebody talked to me about Rastering. I don’t know what it is. Can we do that with Carbide Create and how? It is suppose to leave a better surface at the bottom of a pocket and not require sanding.

That is now in the v8 beta:

as the “Face” toolpath:

Basically it’s just going back-and-forth, though a more usual definition is only in one direction (lift at the end, go back to the first side, repeat)

It refers to the toolpaths going back and forth parallel to each other rather than in an offset that follows the shape of the pocket. It can help hide tool marks if the paths follow the grain. Typically, a “raster” path woud be used on a 3D strategy or in facing rather than simply the bottom of a 2.5d pocket.

Very excited to hear it’s in the v8 beta. This is nearly at the top of my most needed features!

I use this strategy for planing a board already.
But will it be able to create a pocket like the pocket tool is doing with a bowl bit?

Can I install the V8 with my V7 on the same machine?
And do i need a new Motion for project created with v8?

I wouldn’t use it for a pocket — instead, I’d use it as a finishing pass at the bottom of a pocket.

Yes, v7 and v8 can be on the same computer:

No, a Carbide Motion recent enough to work with v7 will work with v8.
