Depends on the tile type. Here’s drag engraving on granite:
I’ve been wanting to try this for a while and came into some time over the holiday to experiment. I played around with different cross-hatch densities to come up with a gray-scale. Then took a high-contrast picture, converted it into gray-scale using 5 or 6 shades and converted those areas into engraving tool paths in v-carve for a diamond drag bit in black granite. Overall, it’s not spectacular, but I think it has promise. The drop off from light to dark needs to be more dramatic for the pi…
More of the same:
This is my first effort with a diamond drag bit on some granite tile from the home depot.

I posted it over in the Shapeoko facebook group and forgot to post it here. I am pretty pleased with it, but the SVG could really use some cleanup before I run it again. It would also be great to find a solid black tile, but as I have recently learned, a diamond drag bit does exactly squat to glazed ceramic tile. Live and learn.
Going to play with some slate next.
I cutout and engraved on marble (and will be doing more stone stuff eventually) for one of the contests. I used diamond coated stone carving tools for a Dremel. Process went way smoother once I started cooling with water, but it was a bit messy.
First project to sort of test the waters, as it were. I’ve wanted to do stone/marble something for a while. I know soap stone exists, and a few people have done that, but it’s soft…and also already been done.
So we have a family friend who had a dog pass not too long ago, and figured this would be a pretty neat/unique thing to give them. I went to Lowes and grabbed this marble tile piece for like $4, got a dog bone shape online, and did some fancy looking text for the dog’s name.
