Help needed for 2.5d carving

is the first attempt to re-do this set:

Need some tutoring how to make a semi 3d project. I think I saw it somewhere, but cannot find it.

(I talked to the artist who designed these pieces, and he gave me allowance to do so, if I succeed I will present him my result, and maybe he agrees to sell the items. Would make me proud, so far it is the nicest set of chess pieces, nicest design, I ever saw. It is Paul Joshua Schneider btw, chess — Paul Joshua)

These would pretty much want to be made by 3D modeling/cutting on a lathe/4th axis.

Import the SVG into Alibre Atom3D and Revolve it?

That said, you’ll pretty much want a 4th axis/lathe…

If you reduce the outline to half:

then save as an SVG, the SVG can be imported and rotate_extruded in OpenSCAD:

which can then be exported as an STL and then imported into Carbide Create Pro:

and cut as a 2-sided flip job using 3D toolpaths.

The Knight of course will require some 3D modeling/editing — perhaps use Blender on the STL?

Or model it completely using Alibre?

Or, go full-bore and draw it up in profile and do something along the lines of:

or

You can get pretty darn close just using CC…

Notice the outline for the main body shape has to be extended to get a good round profile across the body. Then the ends are subtraced away, and the spheres at the top added using MAX merge type. The circle at the bottom/base I used to create a 150mm gage to insure the base was the right height.

Thanks! I’m having a bit of trouble to dive into 3d-construction and 3d CAD, it is another level than 2d CAD. Thanks for the workaround with the CC what I already use (would not dare to say I know it…)

Will keep you informed about my progress, but don’t expect it too soon.

William: yes, the lathe is what the designer uses. I never used one, and probably will need some years to achieve only half the perfection the lathe artists show. Will try to use the CNC machine w/o 4th axis. I am encoraged by projects like this https://www.etsy.com/listing/1165744843/scacchi-scacchi-cnc-scacchi-3d-file-di?ref=yr_purchases
and all the wonderful 3d projects with baby butt smooth surfaces on that site here, not the least is Kevin’s alligator door
