What did you cut on your Shapeoko/ Nomad today?

@jtclose

Really nice progress Jim.

Very cool project! I’m looking forward to seeing how it progresses. I’ve been eyeing the risers for a while now. This might just give me the push to go get them.

The riser are a no brainer once you have them.
Remove the spindle before installing and have another person with you.

Still have not installed mine yet (sitting on my CNC cabinet lower shelf). Just haven’t needed them since I’ve gotten them.

I am helping one of my 10 year old boys with a project. He entered a contest in a woodworking category. There is only so much I trust him with regarding power tools but ai am trying to educate him and we do part of the project on the CNC.

Today he asked, “Cam we start sanding yet?”
I said that we were not ready for that phase yet. His reply was “But that’s the best part”.

I could barely contain my laughter.

Perhaps it was because the sander was the only power too besides the scroll saw he had used. This time I had him driving the CNC including all the button presses and clamping as well as using the trim router to round over the edges.

That’s the best way to get them started!

So here’s the finished project. These are the 5" version made from cherry with mahogany centers. 3 1/2" and 4" versions using walnut and maple are next.

Thought about an inlay on the petals? Or epoxy fill?

@Redlander Yeah I’ve had lots of ideas about finishing touches… Just wanted to get the design finalized first then maybe look at detailed finishes later

@Jeffish

Copy that, these look great as they are. I was just wondering on this end end of the keyboard while waiting on the next round of food to show up!

Hi,
If I didn’t have to worry about money, I would want to make stuff on my Shapeoko all day.
Tried some cast acrylic with a thin coat of dish soap.
Still got gunky white residue, so I tried to incorporate it into a snowflake/Christmasy design…
I’ll keep practicing with feeds, speeds, and bits.

Nice work !
A drag bit may give you a complementary fine line weight option.
Play with the spring tension instead of the height.

The top of a gift box. It will hold 6 jars of homemade jelly as a Christmas gift.

Projects with the minions are the best but their attention span…. Yup enough said.

My 8 year old made Solitaire board for the teacher. Had to be a heart shape. Sanding was THE BEST

Yes, the lure of the iPad is strong.
Also, stools that spin with wheels are way more interesting than the project.

What a great project! I’m looking forward to making birdhouses with my grandkids :slight_smile:

Did you use a laser for the signature or was it etched? It looks like you used an image of the handwriting as opposed to a font - which is a great technique and a nice touch. I ask my clients to do that with personal gifts that I make for them to give.

I did take a basic look at this here:
