I shrunk each state down by 1/16" perimeter to give me 1/8 between states, I cut it with 1/8" bit using inlay tool and had an allowance offset of .025 for the states so they would fit the background. Hope this helps!
The legend! ![]()
Great inlay, I haven’t seen much work with carved inlays above the base material. Looks great in photos but I expect it looks even better in person with real depth ![]()
I’ve got to try a small piece with some bloodwood, Ebony, and vegetable ivory.
I did one that is very similar, right down to the magnets and the cutouts for the cards and the pegs. Great work!
As much as I like thoughtful gifts, sarcastic gifts are my favorite thing about these machines. I’ve been trying to figure out what to get our only intern as a going away present. Then he broke a HDU logo so I mounted it’s head for him.
the amount of effort I’ll put into a joke often surprises even myself. great work
Trashing a piece of HDU is no joke ![]()
You should tell him you are going to dock his final paycheck. That would be a good joke.
Those are pretty rough days when I have a decently sized piece of HDU in the CNC and realize half way through a carve (usually about 2 hours in) that I designed just ONE itsy bitsy toolpath wrong. I go through many stages of grief…

and then I get to go tell my wife. Who fortunately is always understanding.
The madest I ever got was when I had a project basically done and went to do the last step. Walnut with lettering and a copper inlay. I threw a sandwich like a toddler when I watched it be destroyed.
For me, it’s at the end of a 3 hour job that gets to the final path and something goes wrong (Sweepy hits a clamp, bit jams in a deep slot, one of the support screws on my spoilboard comes free, the collet slips, […your disaster here…]), resulting in the bit taking a Gretsky-esque skate across the piece…always through the heart of it. Have you noticed it never skates OFF the piece?
There are a few dents in my garage wall from me venting.
MANY years ago I jammed a screwdriver into my hand while trying to remove a sparkplug from a socket. It hurt, I was mad so I kicked the hubcap which was actual metal on a 1977 F-150. Then that hurt my toe and it still isn’t right 40 years later.
You would think I would have learned not to vent but sometimes it just seems like the right thing to do.
I was remarkably restrained when I had forgotten to turn off the router before running a toolpath with a dragknife. There were some choice words but at least no projectiles.
Finally pulled together this sign for the bin that our delivery people drop packages. It was just a fun project. I did inserts for the individual delivery service signs, tried out a new font, experimented with a new texture. And my finishing lady (my wife) did a ridiculous job painting it! A success all around I think. Pretty sure this is my favorite sign so far.
The before and after are fun ![]()
What a great project. Fantastic! I can see plenty of orders coming in for this one!
Uh, you forgot about WalMart, DoorDash, TacoBell, that pizza joint and your local grocery store.

I’m wrestling with the same project box. Only mine has to be over 100 ft. away down a driveway because the D**N drivers keep getting stuck in the yard while turning their big trucks around since almost none of them can back a vehicle up! ![]()
+1
Ha! In the boondocks area I live in, we don’t have those options. Walmart and Taco Bell are 45 minutes away. Though I think the bears in our area would really appreciate the easy access delivery service box for the Taco Bell and door dash
. Let alone the raccoons, possum, and skunks.
That’s awesome. I’m amazed by the creativity of the folks on here.
The Sun-Times released these player coins for the '85 Bears. I’ve been sitting on them with no real way to display them. So I came up with this.
The more joys of milling doesnt necessarily mean complicated. A neighbours taps needed a washer/spacer, I’m not sure why. They asked to see my collection of nuts. No joy, but I said I could make a couple of spacers from some scrap 8mm aluminium I had. Bobs your uncle, happy neighbour in 20mins. Looked better than I thought it would as the taps dull chrome matched nicely with the aluminium.
I wish I would have known you sell these before I bought my traming tool from Amazon!! ![]()
A neighbor in need is a friend indeed. ![]()
