What did you cut on your Shapeoko/ Nomad today?

Just finished an obligatory Last Super carve. My longest carve to date. Had everything planned out for a traditional rectangle, but at the last minute I had to change everything up to fit a curved piece of wood from and old drop leaf table, cause the Mrs. liked the shape.

So tell us how you did it. The wood looks very white is it maple?

First time using the sheet metal feature in Fusion 360. Not sure why I haven’t used it before but now that I have I don’t think I can go back.

I’m new to woodworking, and can’t tell one species of wood from another. The image was a free download stl, which I imported into CC8pro. I manipulated the image and base height until I found a simulation that I liked. I usually have all my projects with a stock size setting at .75in. This piece of furniture wood was 1.25in thick. I remembered to change the thickness settings, but didn’t change the model base height. I didn’t realize that the difference would cut off the top instead of lay at the bottom. So I changed a 14 hour cut into a 20 hour cut. Yeah, once it started cutting I could have stopped and reset everything, but I wasn’t in that mindset. I used the CMbeta pause feature several times during the carve, and overnight. I used 3 finishing passes 1/8 to 1/32. Oh, and my shop vac crapped out during the roughing so I used a small ryobi hand vac to finish.

Even though it’s cut too deep (at the bottom, you can see the hinge screw holes coming from the back) I kind of like the added dimension look. I did put a horizontal keyhole slot in the back, but it can standup on it’s own. Now I’m debating whether to stain it or just seal it.

I finally finished the project that I started discussing in this thread:

I trashed one $80 piece of material so had to order another 1/2” piece of ColorCore and pay $24 for shipping. The original piece was messed up on one side due to my brain fart and the other side had a slight X shift near the end of the project. I studied the paths over and over and could not find a reason for the shift so I decided to just give it another go and was super careful about each step.

The customer originally wanted the carved portion to be 36” wide but I talked him into changing that slightly so I didn’t have to tile. The material is 23.75x35.75.

It turned out pretty good. But there was a slight height difference in the right side of the W in BW. It’s uglier in person than in the photo but I haven’t found a way to make it better. This photo shows the problem spot up close.

I have tried scraping with a fingernail, dental tool, xacto blade, etc…

I think the material was slightly bowed up and my Xfasten double sided tape didn’t get adhered sufficiently.

I can’t see anything wrong from here !

Nice work, good balance

Awesome! Did you generate the files for the carved top or did you buy them? I’ve been keeping my eye out for some good files to leverage for making a carved top LP.

Where did you get the artwork for the Last Supper. That looks like a good one.
Thanks,
Douglas

I believe this is the one:

I’ve looked through a boatload till I found one that I liked. I tried uploading to SculptOK to manipulate several different images, but I believe I used this as is.

Thank you. I found it.

You’re welcome. 20 characters

A lot of lessons learned. A lot of chips made ( 25 gals plus ).
A fair amount of warts. I am good with the results.

Turned out pretty good!

3 posts were split to a new topic: Making patterns traditionally (by hand)

That’s going to make for a solid race car bed

Quarter panels and hood next? :upside_down_face:

That’s awesome!

My buddy was saying to make a peddle car. I have a open frame go kart I used to race on dirt.

At this point I am going to hold. I have enough pine to get through the project, but I need a different project for now.
